International New Horizon Filmfest Held in Tehran The first edition of the International New Horizon Independent Film Festival, screening short and feature length documentaries, was held in the Iranian capital of Tehran. Secretary-general of the World Assembly of Islamic Awakening Ali Akbar Velayati along with a number of government and cinema officials attended the opening ceremony of the event, IRNA reports. The festival was held in two sections, conference and cinematic competitions, presenting the productions inspired by recent Islamic and European movements against social and political injustice. Organized by Iran’s Documentary and Experimental Film Center (DEFC) and Iran Cinema Organization, the festival screened social and political documentaries on the theme of ‘Towards Justice.’ Some 123 films including 51 long documentaries, 30 short documentaries, 18 feature-length movies and 21 short films were screened at the festival. The US, the UK and Spain from among the productions received from across the world submitted the highest number of films to the festival. The Iranian and international Participants presented their works on different subjects, including the Occupy Wall Street movement, the Islamic Awakening movement, Europe and US financial crisis, the role of Zionist lobbies in the European and US crises, introducing international anti-Zionist and anti-imperialist figures, Islamic resistance against the Zionist regime, war threats against Iran and anti-war movements, the Islamic Revolution of Iran, Iranophobia and Islamophobia, world without Zionism, and world without terrorism and atomic weapons. The jury of the festival composed of American Darnell Stephen Summers and Scott Frank, one Tunisian and one British judge along with Iranian cineastes Ebrahim Hatamikia, Nader Talebzadeh, Gholamreza Montazemi, Jamal Shourjeh, Reza Mirkarimi and Mehdi Homayounfar. Iran’s Documentary and Experimental Film Center (DEFC) is the main forum for the production, distribution and promotion of fiction, documentary, animation and experimental films in the Middle East as it produces about 25 featurelength and 300 short films every year. The first edition of the International New Horizon Independent Film Festival was held in early September 2012.
