Boxing Referee Banned after Disqualifying Iran Athlete The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) suspended German referee Frank Scharmach five days for his questionable decision to disqualify Iranian athlete Ali Mazaheri in a heavyweight bout with Cuba's Jose Larduet Gomez. According to a statement released by the AIBA, the German referee has been suspended from officiating matches at the London Olympic Games from August 1 until August 6. Scharmach was the referee when Mazaheri was disqualified in his fight against Gomez during the round of 16 heavyweight (91kg) boxing match at the Excel Arena in London. Mazaheri, who had been leading by two points going into the second round before being disqualified for persistent holding, called his disqualification from the heavyweight boxing competition a "conspiracy." "It was a fix. I could have got a bronze easily if it hadn't been for that," he said after walking out of the ring before the decision was announced. | ||
