Iranian FM to visit Gaza
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi plans to pay a visit to the Gaza Strip. Heading a high-ranking delegation, Salehi travel to the region to express solidarity with the people injured in the recent Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and express Iranian nation’s strong support for the Palestinian resistance movement. In case of making the final arrangement for the visit, a number of MPs will also accompany Salehi during the trip. No news have been received so far about whether Egyptian government has agreed to allow Iranian delegation to use the Rafah border crossing to travel to Gaza or not. An Iranian parliamentary delegation once intended to visit Gaza during the 30-year rule of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who stepped down on February 11, 2011, but was not allowed to make the trip. The Islamic Republic of Iran cut diplomatic ties with Egypt in 1979 because Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel and offered asylum to former Iranian dictator Mohammad Reza Pahlavi after he was deposed. Relations between Iran and Egypt began to thaw after the election of Egypt’s new president, Mohamed Morsi, who assumed office on June 30, 2012. However, full diplomatic relations between the two countries have not been restored yet. Israeli airstrikes, shelling, and artillery fire have left 36 Palestinians, including 8 children and a pregnant woman, dead and over 300 others injured since November 10. Some of the injured are in critical condition.
