Iranian Women’s Status Improves
Iranian women have made progress in a variety of fields after the victory of Islamic Revolution (1979). Maryam Mojtahedzadeh, the head of Presidential Office’s Center for Women, said that the number of female students has risen by 25 percent since 1979 while Iranian population grew by 2.5 times, Fars New Agency reported. Mojtahedzadeh pointed out that women’s contribution to the management of the country is on the rise, adding that Iran’s Cabinet presently has four women members who participate in the country’s decision-making and planning processes. She noted that women advisors are working in all ministries, governorates and governor generals’ offices. “They review issues related to women and endeavor to improve their status,” she said. The official noted that Iranian women are working in management positions of ministries and organizations, pointing out that men and women receive equal income at all occupational levels. “The literacy rate of Iranian people before the victory of Islamic Revolution was 39 percent but presently the figure for 9 to 26 years old is 97 percent,” she said. Mojtahedzadeh further said that women pilots and aid workers are active in the country, while the number of women professors has increased by 30 percent. She noted that Women’s Cooperative and Entrepreneurship Development Foundation, which has been very successful in generating jobs for women, is ready to exchange its experiences with other organizations. The contribution of women to economic activities has risen significantly and they occupy many key posts of the sector in recent years. Women have managed to take up jobs mostly held by men previously. In view of this evident progress, a charter is being drawn up for determining the role of women in realizing the objectives set by the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in the “Year of Economic Jihad”. The charter will outline the measures needed to enhance women’s role in socioeconomic sectors.
