Meymand Closer to Int’l Registration
Meymand Closer to Int’l Registration The dossier for the global registration of Meymand Village in Kerman province is near completion. Mahnaz Ashrafi, director of Meymand Cultural Heritage Center, also told CHTN that the dossier is being prepared in cooperation with the World Heritage Registration Promotion Office since last year. “We need a short-, mid- and long-term program for completing the dossier,” she added. Ashrafi said that at present, plans for designing an information and museum center as well as a research site in the village are on the agenda. She noted that the preliminary work for designing the information center in line with the traditional texture of the village started since the second half of the last Iranian year (ended March 2011). Information Center Following the budget allocated for the project, the official predicted that it would be inaugurated in March 2012, adding that credits have been secured from provincial and national budgets. Operations for setting up the site’s perimeter and establishing the exterior of the information center have been completed. “Currently, we are equipping the interior part of the building,” she said. The building for the Information and Museum Center was established after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, but it was used by the University of Medical Sciences. Since it is inconsistent with the traditional texture of the village, measures are underway to indigenize the building and convert it into a cultural center. A comprehensive report on the historical village of Meymand has been prepared by experts and will be submitted to UNESCO in the next Iranian year (starting March 20, 2012). The report contains information about the village, including its history, plans and restoration works carried out in recent years. Unique Village Meymand is the only historical village in the world whose residents have retained their traditional way of living over thousands of years. The village dates back to 3,000 years. One can clearly feel the close human interaction with nature as it was in the 2nd millennium BC, while walking through the village. Nomads of the region annually migrate four times a year. The nomads travel to a different place with regard to the geo-climatic conditions, architecture and type of food. These types of migration are only seen in Meymand and nowhere else in the world.
