Airport Projects Draw $120m Some 1,200 billion rials ($120 million) have been spent on airports projects, said the managing director of Iran Airports Company (IAC). Mahmoud Rasoulinejad stated that airport development projects built at a cost of some 900 billion rials ($90 million) were implemented nationwide, of which 400 billion rials ($40 million) and 500 billion rials ($50 million) were provided by the provinces and IAC respectively, Mehr News Agency reported. The official noted that some 300 billion rials ($30 million) of the navigation equipment were also purchased during the period. He added that the development fund allocated to the airports rose by 15 percent in the current Iranian year (started March 20) compared to the figure for the preceding year. He hoped this will help accelerate the implementation of airport development projects. The official said that Iran’s air transport fleet is not old and dilapidated and the entire aircraft fleet has obtained standard certification from Iran’s Aviation Organization. In April, deputy minister of science for research said Iran plans to manufacture airplanes which can carry 150 passengers. Mohammad Mehdinejad said the country’s researchers have begun designing the proto-types of the plane. He added that the commercial and conceptual designs of the project have been accomplished. Late in February, Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi announced plans to build new passenger planes. “After making several types of military and non-military planes like Saeqeh and Iran 140, we are studying plans to manufacture small passenger planes,” Vahidi told reporters at the time. He further stated that experts have prepared the grounds to start a project to manufacture planes with the passenger capacity of 50 to 100. | ||
